I want a podcast app that functions like a radio dial. So you can fish around and scan through programs and discover podcasts by listening to their *actual audio* rather than judging them by name and host and art. Someone please take this idea.

Like that old Milk Music app but with Podcasts instead of music
Specifically the original version, not the current one
even an internet radio dial like this would be awesome.

NPROne does fulfill some of this desire for me.
Have you ever tried this? @NinaGarthwaite1 showed it to me - it's pretty close to this! cdsshortwave.org
I like how they hid a numbers station on the dial
Love it when smart people get to make amazing things.
💕 Thanks so much for sharing CDS Shortwave! Also wanted to let all y'all know two very important things: 1) Every time you refresh the radio, the content is switched up. Each visit is a new experience! 2) We also have a submitted sounds station so pls send us stuff!!!
I'm going to mention this in Thursday's @Podnews - interesting user experience.
dead air, dead air, Casper ad read, plugs, dead air
On @NPRone they have a random type stream I believe. So that's part way there. You can skip etc if I remember correctly.
Thanks for my next UX design prototype idea!
this is a really good idea
Cool. Check it out. Welcome to nēdl. #FindVoicesBeHeard nedl.com

I’ve been thinking about something like this for awhile. It is a great idea. Imagine tuning in to discover new voices and stories that you wouldn’t have attempted to seek out otherwise. It’s genius.
Ooo, great idea.
Cool. Hope you like it. Welcome to nēdl. #FindVoicesBeHeard nedl.com

Shall give it a look. Thanks.
Myself, @indeox @tomhannen and @hpettersson created this back in 2010 for the BBC but couldn't quite get the idea funded - here it is, very old and not really mobile optimised! thewireless.deepcobalt.com
But god it’s ugly...
Peak skeuomorphism.
maybe after saying farewell to the twitter suggestions, this might be the next best thing for discoverability on @OvercastFM
Would love to know your thoughts Welcome to nēdl. #FindVoicesBeHeard nedl.com

White noise, Radiolab, White noise, 99pi, white noise, more white noise...oh sorry that was a Nickelback podcast...white noise...Marketplace...
It should have a checklist where you can mark your likes/dislikes. Could even use existing categories on itunes, etc to creat list to make it easier to sort
We hope so. Welcome to nēdl. #FindVoicesBeHeard nedl.com

That’s a great idea. Pitch it to like stitcher. I’m sure they’ll listen to you.
Our friends at @podcastplaylist are working on something ...
A curated podcast station would be pretty awesome. If you put together a running playlist of your favorite individual podcast episodes or series, that would be pretty cool
Or if you could fish around on your app for podcasts that you and your friends recommend. I would be into that
Looping in @podysseyapp. They're like a GoodReads but for podcasting. Easy spying on what your friends like. 😎
so….a randomized playlist?
sounds like we've found a roundabout way to talk about discovery yet again
I need it to be round. I just need it to be. (Ideally with no names or album art presented- but I know thats a big ask)
Would also be cool if, like radio, it took location into account. So if you went on a road trip you could take the opportunity to search the dial for new shows.
really good shows in LA and NY and then Jesus podcasts in the midwest
But at some point it just becomes internet radio, right?
Not quite. We have more than 120,000 stations from around the world and most of them are actual live simulcasts. Welcome to nēdl. #FindVoicesBeHeard

how about I mail you a CD!
What would you like to determine where in the podcast episode you drop in?, What podcasts should be included? Would it normally be just the latest episode of each podcast, or more like each podcast is it's own station?
Try the app called Just Listen created by @ListenNotes.
I feel like an important part of radio is the way it happens in the moment, where we might discover something in the middle of it and now have the ability to seek it out in full, later. A randomized playlist would still lock you in to the start of every episode.
Yes! Jim exactly! And then you could have the option of starting from the top if you wanted to!
300 AM talk radio shows later
not the same but i always liked prx remix for its randomness.
Great #podcast idea. I suggest the name #PodcastScanner. Now that you tweeted the idea, and it has a name, someone should make it happen
Thanks. We are. Welcome to nēdl. #FindVoicesBeHeard nedl.com

So much fun. Eaves dropping around the world
Wow, that’s crazy!
why is this so cute and delightful?
Omg - down the rabbit hole - amazing!
Oh wow, thank you for this.
I recently found out about radio.garden and fell in love. a podcast.garden would be just as exciting and this is a very good idea.

I worked on a prototype for a dating app like this, the sounds being audio profile (the voices)
That is something I wanted too!!!
This is just radio without commercials.
It can be. Welcome to nēdl. #FindVoicesBeHeard nedl.com

Love radio dials. I've been meaning to make a version of the moodulator for podcasts (thinking about my downloads list) - but it might be even better for discovery. Is there a good/open source of podcast feeds to sample from? twitter.com/kristianthorin…
This week @BBCRD we built some fun cardboard radio interfaces to trial many ideas quickly. This is my team's Moodulator: A single dial to tune into any mood within your music collection.
Hi. We're live and available for free. Welcome to nēdl. #FindVoicesBeHeard

I have a design for the "dadulator" (a moodulator for my Dad) that _nearly_ works (code and lasering) based on moodulator + buckleywilliams.com/case-studies/b… - I should finish it off and put it up somewhere...
I love this idea... I guess this is what our parents and grandparents were doing on the AM radio dial. I never understood how they could listen to talk radio, and now I listen to podcasts all day sometimes. It must be an age thing.
Hmm, I can work on this along with my other side projects, nice idea, my hands love it...
I pitched a similar idea to @coreyford many years ago. I imagined a short clip for each podcast that listeners could play through like a radio station. If one sounded interesting, expand to play the full episode. It would have sounded amazing! (or horrible)
is one of our investors. Welcome to nēdl. #FindVoicesBeHeard

Audio skeuomorphism. A 99% Invisible episode on skeuomorphic design seems like a good idea
Like an AM radio?
is a lot like what you’re describing, even has local programming and shows which have podcasts you can subscribe to outside the app or choose to “follow” within. Highly recommend!
That’s a great idea. 💡

Yes!! My same thoughts!
But wait... would each station be an individual podcast feed? Or collections of related podcasts? 🤔
I want one that can sort podcasts by the day of the week/month they publish. All my faves come out on mondays and I’m through them by Wednesday morning.
That's correct. This is what we do. Find Voices. Be Heard. Welcome to nēdl.

“Ask and you shall receive.” Thank You, Based God.
BBC iPlayer radio comes pretty close!
Yessss. Love this idea
Something like Spotify Stations but with just podcasts? Really into this idea!
AVERY do you know @CDSDuke shortwave is almost exactly this: cdsshortwave.org
Thank you for sharing CDS Shortwave! 💕
what if it was like Netflix and if you hovered over a show tile it played a clip that'd be cool
oooooh thats a great idea
BBC iPlayer radio has round dial - but only tunes to BBC stations.
In the meanwhile, you should check out @thefounderhour podcast.
Great idea!!! Can the folks at @hola_holacode make this happen?!
Is this NPR One
Stations on @RadioPublic is "choose audio w/your ears first" - just tap "start listening" on any collection of shows. Details: about.radiopublic.com/2019/03/11/int… Any section of Explore in the apps can turn into this kind of listening discovery. (And we just turned it over, so have fun!)
Introducing Stations: the lean-back listening experience
Now, both iPhone and Android users can enjoy stations, either with their own selection of shows or with RadioPublic’s hand-curated collections.
