I love @jsnell’s annual Six Colors Report Card for Apple. He compiles ratings and quotes from a HUGE selection of people (myself included) and puts it in context with historical data. I barely read anything anymore, but I always read this.
Apple in 2019: The Six Colors report card
It’s time for our annual look back on Apple’s performance during the past year, as seen through the eyes of writers, editors, developers, podcasters, and other people who spend an awful lot of time thinking about Apple. This is...

“I genuinely fear for the future of the Mac as a platform for serious computer users…. Not one thing about Mac software got better in 2019 and everything that did change made it worse.” — @gruber on Catalina and its heavy-handed security changes

It was annoying for about 6 days though. Did it actually have a lasting effect on normal consumers?
I’ve been using Catalina for months now and I still get those dialogs.
Fair enough, that would be frustrating.
I don’t think Apple got the message. Pretty sure I got a couple new annoying UAC dialogs in 10.15.3.
... are you not of the opinion that a read-only system partition and more granular disk permissions are important security features?
Catalina looked at vista and said “we should do THAT” But the bugs are the worst part. Every Apple software release in 2019 has been a bug ridden mess.
This actually explains the dumb iPad multitasking screed a lot It speaks to the existential fear of becoming obsolete
I would argue the opposite. Apple’s refusal/inability to scale the iPadOS UI to expert usage means the Mac is entirely as relevant as ever. I’m wishing that iPad were putting up more of a fight.
I agree with the last Connected episode on this. You can use the iPad without ever using the multitasking features
Assuming app devs are serious computer users..there is no need to worry. How else does Apple go keep its app ecosystem alive?
That's a good take. Windows is trending to "getting out of my way" and my Mac was the opposite. Removing open source tools, Catalina's heavy hand, and a general hostility to non-just-Mac development is a non-starter. I can manage Linux/Win and get more done.
I was hosting a webinar 2 days ago. I had to say “I’m sorry, I gotta allow screensharing, I’ll return asap” to the participants. Not fun.
Same here. It’s a must read.
Good stuff. From a practical point of view, the software situation is very troubling but it is dwarfed by the decisions Cook made re: Trump and China. I frankly feel like a bad person for not removing Apple from my life in protest.
Aw shucks. Thanks.
I wonder if it makes it to Craig.
I don't get the hate for the Apple TV. I've used other streaming devices and smart TVs; they are universally an awful experience.
